In different articles of our blog, we have emphasized the importance of caring for horses hooves.
Its importance is vital since the different problems of the helmets can produce enormous mobility problems. Keep in mind that the thin ends of the horse, which end in the helmet itself, hold many kilos.
Despite this, they have a great capacity for physical work. Either in different tasks or running.
The helmets, constituting the final part of the extremities, not only serve as support for all this weight, but they also provide a great traction capacity and contribute to the correct flow of blood from the extremities.
Therefore, in this post, we talk specifically about the care of horses hooves.
How are the horses hooves?
To make good care of the hooves of our horse, we have to know them thoroughly. Thus, we have to recognize the parts that make up the horse’s hull, as well as the way it grows.
Parts of the helmet:
Before starting to see the care of the hooves of our horse, it is important to know in depth the parts that form it. There are three different parts of the helmets.
The external part of the hull whose growth is made downwards.
The lower area of the helmet that is responsible for protecting it, consisting of a thin layer very sensitive.
A buffer zone of the horse that uses to contract and extend his helmet.
Both the wall and the sole of the helmet are made of hard keratin, while the frog has a softer but more elastic type of keratin.
The complexity of the hull of the horse resides in its tubular matrix since different types of keratin are intermingled between the frog and the inner wall of the hull.
As we already know, the horse hooves of the horse do not stop growing, as happens to us with the nails. This growth is based on three layers, determined by strata. Therefore, the growth process between these walls is really complex.
The review of these three layers also determines the good health of the horse hooves. You also learn how to care for a horse in summer, don’t avoid to read.
As a general rule, the growth of the horse’s hooves is 0.2 mm per day.
How to keep helmets healthy?
The best way to maintain healthy helmets is based on two basic principles of horse care: nutrition and cleanliness.
Nutrition for horses hooves
A balanced diet is a basis for anyone, and in this case, it is not an exception!
Many of the problems in the hooves of horses are derived from poor nutrition, so it is a fundamental basis in their care.
When we think about the proper nutrition, in this case, we have to look at the growth of the helmet. We talk about the formation of cells in constant growth.
The nutrients in the forage are not enough for the correct growth of the hulls. At least, for those horses that perform some kind of work. So, what kind of extra nutrients do we have to feed our horse?
First, we have to look at keratin. To help our horse to grow keratin with strength, amino acids and lipids are essential. In this sense, lysine is the most important component for better growth.
It is necessary to provide good doses of energy in these nutrients for the effort of the helmet to develop correctly, just as vitamins and minerals are necessary for the correct synthesis of growth enzymes.
As it could not be otherwise, the correct absorption of calcium allows a greater strength also of the helmet. In addition, it forms a barrier against bacteria and fungi that can weaken the hull of the animal.
Remember that virtue is in balance. If, after consulting with an equine nutritionist, you determine an amount of each component, exceeding these limits does not have to imply an even greater improvement. It could even be harmful to your horse!
The cleaning of the helmet is another of the fundamental parts for its maintenance. Of course, always do it carefully! It is advisable that if you ride horses, perform this cleaning before and after exercising.
For this, we must first calm our horse, since it is an arduous job that requires a lot of tranquility.
We will start with the outer part of the helmets. For which, with a brush with thick bristles we will remove all accumulated dirt, such as mud or dirt.
Subsequently, with a clean helmet, we will remove all accumulated dirt, using thoroughly to remove all debris, such as small stones that accumulate between the sole and the frog. Be especially careful with the soft parts of your helmet!
Then, we can protect the inside of the helmet by putting oil or grease with a brush. If we see that the growth of the nail is asymmetrical, we will have to file them to avoid their imbalance.
Oh, and remember to change horseshoe to your horse every 45 days or so!
Cleaning the horse is an excellent time to check the condition of its hooves.
Among other issues, what we have to attend mainly is that there is no type of crack in the hull or that is especially dry, which could determine different problems.
We also have to focus on the smell they give off since if it is especially unpleasant it could be due to an infection.
Problems and affections of helmets
If your horse’s hooves care is so poor can lead our horse to suffer from various conditions, among which are infections, abscesses, lameness or serious diseases such as laminitis.
That’s why your horse’s hooves care is very important, do not you think?
